Don’t Mop the Floor with the Plug in the Drain!

Prevention_spilling_waterSo you’re getting older now and your body is really feeling the years.  You’re parts are well beyond their warranty and “servicing” has taken on a whole new meaning.  You start to feel clicks and hear sounds from areas that were silent only a week ago and your waistline… well let’s just say that you’re starting to look at “laceless” options in the shoe department.

For two years now, your doctor has been telling you to start taking care of yourself and you keep making excuses… right after my brother’s wedding; just let me get through Christmas; my birthday is coming up; but it’s summer.  Then you realize that 10 years have passed and it’s no longer just your waistline and butt and a few extra bodily noises… now you have high blood pressure, you have knee pain that’s unbearable and your doctor now tells you that you’re officially considered obese.  To make things worse, he hands you some free test strips and literature on Type 2 Diabetes.  Congratulations, you’re now one of the growing number of North Americans that have Adult Onset Diabetes.  So, what happened?

You dieted several times over the years to try and slim down and even had some success.  But every time you lost weight, it slowly came back.  The doctor prescribed some medications to help with your blood pressure and joint pain.  You even tried some “all natural” over the counter remedies but at best, you only delayed the inevitable.  Well, therein lies your problem… you were addressing the symptoms rather than the cause.  Here’s a rather silly example that illustrates what I mean.

Imagine leaving your kitchen sink running with the plug in.  A number of problems will result… the counter will get wet, the floor will get wet and of course, water will leak to the floor below.  So, to solve this problem, you send one person to wipe the counter, one to mop the floor upstairs and one to mop downstairs but you send nobody to actually turn off the faucet.  Once again, you’re treating the symptoms rather than the cause.

Take a look at weight loss.  One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to “lose weight” is that they begin to count calories.  Don’t get me wrong, your consumption of calories has a great deal to do with your girth but it’s the wrong approach.  Instead, you should be looking at where those calories are coming from.  So often, I see people checking the calorie content of a selection of processed “granola” bars or opting for the bag of “veggie chips” over the regular potato chips… replacing the devil they know with the devil in disguise – a discussion for another day.  The thing to remember here is this… Your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, joint pain and diabetes are not individual problems – they are symptoms of a problem, your lifestyle.

I understand, you’re probably concerned that changing your lifestyle means you’ll have to give up all your favourite foods… not so.  I also understand that changing one’s lifestyle may seem daunting and I know that trying to make the right decisions can be very confusing.  We are surrounded by “experts” on every channel and website from Dr. OZ to Jamie Oliver to Jennifer Hudson and with so much advice, it’s hard to decide what’s right for you.  So, you do what most people do when they’re faced with too much information… you shut down and change nothing.

This blog is designed to give you a fighting chance… to cut through the misinformation, the deception and the confusion… to help you better understand what your body needs and doesn’t need.  We’ll discuss the benefits of intermittent fasting and nutritional density and I’ll show you how you can help your body to become the efficient machine it was designed to be.  But most of all, I’ll help you to find your starting point – the point at which you begin your journey to becoming One Healthy Bugger…

Please stay tuned…
